BRAINERD — Central Lakes College is well represented at the NCAA Basketball Academy July 27-29 in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
CLC women’s head coach Krystal Brodeen is one of 12 Junior College coaches selected to coach one of the six rising sophomore teams.
Forty women’s junior college sophomores were selected as a part of the NCAA College Basketball Academy Women’s Junior College Pathway.
Brodeen heard about the Basketball Academy as a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
“It’s pretty cool to be selected as one of the 12 JUCO coaches in the whole United States,” Brodeen said. “I’m super excited to try and promote CLC and Brainerd.
CLC’s Chesney Phillipp will represent the Raiders as a player. Phillipp was named All-Minnesota College Athletic Conference honorable mention for the Northern Division. She averaged 7.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game on 46% shooting.
“This is the only event Division I coaches can recruit at during their dead period in July,” Brodeen said. “It’ll be a good opportunity for these JUCO players to put their talent out there.”
CLC assistant women’s basketball coach Mark Lundquist is Phillipp’s chaperone for the weekend.
“Every player needs a chaperone, so Mark will be down there too,” Brodeen said. “It’ll be good for both of us to network a little bit and meet other people. I’m super excited. We can’t recruit while we are down there, but the NCAA is paying for all of it. Players can also hear from speakers and other coaches on some life skills that prepare them for the next level.”
