World No. 1 Nelly Korda announced on Friday that she was withdrawing from a Ladies European Tour event in England.
The reasoning for her decision is uncommon, to say the least.
The 25-year-old was set to defend her title at the LET Aramco Team Series tournament at Centurion Club in Hemel Hempstead, England, which is scheduled for Wednesday through Friday. Korda won the 54-hole event by four strokes over Charley Hull for her third career LET win, according to a report by ESPN’s Mark Schlabach.
The two-time major winner most recently played during last week’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash. Korda missed the cut for the third time in as many starts during the event.
The LPGA’s next tournament will be the Amundi Evian Championship (the year’s fourth major) from July 11-14.
Korda won her first major at the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship and then captured first at this year’s Chevron Championship in April. Korda has struggled since then, however.
The Bradenton, Fla., native missed the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open, Meijher LPGA Classic and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
She won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2021 and is slated to represent the U.S. in the women’s golf competition from Aug. 7-10 during the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.
