Patrick Murphy and Alabama softball are on the brink of elimination from the 2024 Women’s College World Series.
The Crimson Tide, the No. 14 national seed, lost its WCWS opener on Thursday against UCLA, falling 4-1 after having just one run on six hits. Alabama had its opportunities vs. the Bruins — including a look at a go-ahead run with the bases loaded in the top of fifth inning — but ultimately couldn’t muster the runs to down the No. 6 national seed.
Now Alabama will look to advance to the Women’s College World Series championship series through the loser’s bracket, where first they must take on ACC regular-season and conference tournament champion. Duke, in its seventh season as a program, was similarly maligned at the plate, falling 9-1 to three-time defending national champion Oklahoma on Thursday.
