During the off season for high school sports, the Sweet Home High School girls basketball team is hard at work practicing to prepare for their upcoming season. The girls participated in a basketball camp on June 17 and 18.
This annual youth camp provides the coach an opportunity to connect with younger kids in the community who are interested in the program and teaches them essential fundamentals. Head Coach Erika Evans mentioned that kids as young as kindergarten participated in the camp.
“It allows me to identify which kids have a genuine interest in basketball,” said Evans.
The camp benefits both the coach and the attendees by fostering relationships before they reach high school. The camp kicked off with a guest appearance by husky alumni Brooke Burke, who currently plays basketball at Pacific University.
Additionally, Evans invited Sydney Wiese, a WNBA player who was drafted 11th overall in 2017 and played at Oregon State University. Wiese shared insights on her journey with the camp participants.
Evans noted the enthusiasm of the girls towards Wiese, asking her a range of questions and gaining inspiration from her success.
The annual camp is just one part of the girls’ basketball team’s summer activities, as they continue to practice, participate in scrimmages, and have a packed schedule of over 20 games in their summer league.
“We will continue to hold this yearly camp and aim to bring in more guest speakers,” said Evans.
