Wheeling, W. Va. – On Thursday, the Wheeling University Athletic Department announced the hiring of Patti Maroney as the Head Women’s Golf Coach at Wheeling University. Maroney will become the fourth Head Coach in program history, taking the reins from current Head Men’s Golf Coach Rich Conwell. Maroney brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience on the course, and she is excited to help Wheeling Women’s Golf continue to grow.
“I am overly excited to join the Wheeling University athletic leadership team,” said Maroney. “I have always taken on challenges in my life, mostly because I want to make a difference. I look forward to being the best coach and mentor I can be, to building a winning team, and more importantly, assisting the young ladies as they navigate through their academic career.”
Maroney has been highly involved in the game of golf as both a player and an advocate for the game. As a player, she represented the state of West Virginia three separate times at the United States Golf Association (USGA) State Team matches and has multiple top 10 finishes in the West Virginia Women’s State Amateur. She continues to be active in the game of golf to this day, winning the 2023 West Virginia Senior Amateur Individual Championship, and adding a pair of runner up finishes at the event. She is also a former board member for the West Virginia Golf Association, where she helped advocate for the sport of golf and its continued growth in West Virginia.
“We are excited to officially welcome Coach Patti Maroney to our Cardinal family as our new Head Women’s Golf Coach,” said Wheeling University Athletic Director Carrie Hanna. “It was clear through the interview and recommendation process; Coach Maroney is a mission fit leader and will be an exceptional mentor to our student-athletes. Coach Maroney’s passion, experience, knowledge, competitiveness, and love for the game is a tremendous asset to the Wheeling Women’s Golf Program and collegiate golfers. We look forward to Coach Maroney building on Wheeling Cardinals Women’s Golf high standards and rich tradition of excellence!”
Along with her experience on the golf course, Maroney is also a licensed dietitian and a licensed radiology technician. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition from West Virginia University and went on to obtain her Master’s of Science in Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University. She currently works for WVU Hospitals, with her main location being Reynolds Memorial Hospital, as a Dietitian.
Maroney was born and raised in nearby Glen Dale, West Virginia, where she was a two-sport athlete at John Marshall High School, playing Basketball and Track & Field. She would earn All-State honors as a High School Basketball player and went on to play for two years at Kent State University.
She lives with her two Yorkies (Moose & Chubb) and her Cat (Marty).
