Purpose:
The objective of this drill is for players to practice deadening the ball and bunting it to specific areas.
Setup:
Begin by drawing three semicircles in the dirt in front of home plate: one at 4 feet, one at 8 feet, and one at 12 feet from the plate.
Instructions:
- The batter’s goal is to bunt the ball into one of the three zones. Each bunt into the first zone earns 5 points, the second zone earns 3 points, and the third zone earns 1 point.
- Players should keep track of their scores, and the player with the highest score at the end wins.
Coaching Tips:
- Advise players to lower the bat by bending their knees rather than their waist.
- Players should maintain a wide stance for better balance.
- The bat’s barrel should always start at the top of the strike zone at a slight angle.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Encourage younger players to focus on watching the ball all the way to the bat to improve hand-eye coordination and ensure better contact.
- Remind younger athletes to grip the bat loosely in their fingers, not in their palms, for better control and a softer touch.
- Teach younger players to angle the bat slightly downwards to help deaden the ball and keep it in the desired zone.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Older players should work on the precision of their bunts, aiming for specific spots within each zone to improve accuracy.
- Encourage experienced players to practice both drag and push bunts to add versatility to their offensive skills.
- For older athletes, stress the importance of situational awareness and teach them to read the defense to adjust their bunt placement accordingly.
