Another year. Another new scheduling format for Big 12 Basketball was announced on Thursday. The 2024-25 season will be the first time the league will have 16 members.
Next week, Texas and Oklahoma leave the Big 12 for the SEC. Then, in August, the conference adds Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah, bringing the league to 16 members.
With the addition of the teams, men’s basketball will move to a 20-game conference schedule, up from 18 games in past seasons. So each team plays every other team at least once, the men’s teams will have five teams they play home and away, five teams they play only at home, and five teams they play only away.
Women’s basketball will remain with an 18-game conference schedule. In order to make sure every team plays every other team, the women’s teams will have three teams they play home and away, six teams they play only at home, and six teams they play only away.
Opponents were selected based on a combination of geography, historical results and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitiveness. A full Big 12 schedule will be released at a later date.
