RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s golf team is set to compete and make an impact in their first season in the Southland Conference (SLC) in 2024-25.
UTRGV and Stephen F. Austin will push the total number of teams to 12 next season. Along with the two newcomers, there are five full-time SLC members in Houston Christian, Lamar, Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Incarnate Word. There are two affiliated members in Augusta University and Bryant University.
Augusta has won the last three SLC Championships, including last year’s individual champion, representing the SLC in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Since the first women’s golf SLC championship was held in 2002, Lamar has the most team championships with seven while Sam Houston has the most individual champions with six.
August led all teams in the SLC with a No. 65 rankings last season followed by Houston Christian (179), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (183), Lamar (202), Texas A&M-Commerce (203), Bryant (254), and Incarnate Word (277). UTRGV finished ranked No. 242 and Stephen F. Austin ranked No. 238.
