No. 6 UCLA softball’s journey at the 2024 Women’s College World Series concluded on Sunday, marking the end of Bruins star shortstop Maya Brady’s college career.
Initially delayed due to weather, the final Pac-12 softball showdown between No. 6 Stanford and No. 8 UCLA unfolded at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. Stanford emerged victorious with a 3-1 win, closing out the last “Pac-12 after dark” softball game.
UCLA seized an early lead against Stanford pitcher NiJaree Canady, as right fielder Megan Grant smashed a lead-off solo home run in the second inning. However, Canady held strong after that, allowing only one more run to the Bruins the entire game.
After tying the game in the third inning, Stanford took the lead in the fifth with an insurance run off a sacrifice fly by Allie Clements. Despite a late rally by UCLA in the seventh, Canady shut down the Bruins to secure the victory.
Canady pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits with eight strikeouts. UCLA freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Terry took the loss, while Maya Brady struggled at the plate, going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. Brady concluded her collegiate career with impressive stats, including 279 hits, 71 home runs, and 246 RBIs in 248 games.
UCLA finished the season with a 43-12 record overall and 17-4 in Pac-12 play. Stanford moves on to face the No. 1 seed, Texas, on Monday. Check out the full recap of UCLA’s 3-1 loss to Stanford in the Women’s College World Series.
